What is ART?

If you think art isn’t important to you, think again. Art is much more than the painting on the wall or the sculpture in the hall.

ART IS… MUSIC

Classical, folk, rock and roll and every note that was ever written were all conceived of through inspiration and discipline, understanding of theory, interpretation of concept and expertise through practice.

ART IS… DESIGN

Your clothing, wristwatch, furniture and bed linens. Your rugs, dishes, cutlery. Your whole house, car and stereo were all brought to life by the skill of industrial designers, architects, and talented people in design offices all over the world.

ART IS… POETRY

The expression of emotion and the narrative of life’s experience brought to fruition through thoughtfulness and the need to “get it out”.

ART IS… LITERATURE

Books can take you to places unimagined, away from your time and to whole new experiences you may never have considered. A story can change the way you view or live your life.

ART IS… THEATRE

An escape from the mundane through the actors’ skill in collaboration with all the others who create the stage’s world: the costumes, lighting, sound, sets, props, backdrops, music and script.

ART IS… ENTERTAINMENT

Movies, comedians, variety shows, TV shows, computer games, so much – too much!

ART IS… DANCE

From Ballet to Hip Hop, from choreography to performance, dance is an emotion evoking, highly skilled and disciplined series of body movement. Dance is for everyone, an expression of so many things.

ART IS… COMMERCIAL

When you read a newspaper, open a magazine, surf the web, look at a brochure, read a sign, you are faced with the work of a multitude of artists who specialize in graphic design, lettering, photography, graphic design, illustration, writing and editing. All these things work together to bring you information so you can make choices.

ART IS… CULINARY

Food sustains life, but fine food brings quality of life. Every taste of well prepared food, every sip of wine or spirits has been carefully considered, explored, tested and brought to the table by culinary artists – chefs, vintners.

ART IS… VISUAL

Back to the painting on the wall and the sculpture in the hall… As you can see, its only a small part of the whole, and we haven’t even touched on many more aspects of art! Even cave people, in the meanest of circumstances, couldn’t live without art. Hard times enhance the spirit of creativity in all walks of life. Those who are creative thinkers, are innovative and motivated, survive better with more comfortable lives. Studies have shown that people with a creative background do better in the fields of medicine, science and mathematics., in fact in any problem solving positions. Those who surround themselves with whatever form of art they find stimulating or enjoyable live a richer life magnitudes more satisfying than those who see art as a frivolous waste of time.. tests show that even chickens lay more eggs and are more content when listening to Mozart!

ART IS… CULTURE

Culture can be defined as the inclination of a group; their behaviours, beliefs and history. If the inclination is to the arts, the society is seen in a positive light and if the society is warlike without the balancing factor of a strong artistic aspect, it’s seen in a negative light. A society’s culture relies on its need for excellence. Throughout history, each civilization has been defined by its culture. The farther removed it is from mere survival illustrates its degree of sophistication.

Exposing our children to the arts is a huge investment in giving them a creative background and it insures a better future – as important as keeping their bodies healthy! Stinting on art in a community is just as dangerous as stinting on health care.

THINK ABOUT IT!
